Wilkes Women's Soccer Second Half Efforts Not Enough to Get Past Elizabethtown
EDWARDSVILLE, PA - The Wilkes women's soccer team fell after a close match against Elizabethtown on Saturday afternoon, falling by a score of 2-1.
The Blue Jays struck early in the first half to take a 1-0 lead. The Elizabethtown goal was scored by Ava Whisten in the fourth minute with a shot from outside the left side of the box that found the right corner of the net. The Colonels had limited offensive opportunities for the remainder of the first half that were shut down by the Blue Jay defense. Sarah Eliff (Owings, MD/Northern) had a shot off a corner kick that was stopped by Elizabethtown's goalkeeper and Julianna Askins (Carlisle, PA/Carlise) had a near goal with a shot from outside of the box that missed just left of the net. Amanda Lee (Middletown, PA/Middletown Area) made two saves in goal during the first half.
The Colonels came back with renewed energy in the second half, finding more offensive opportunities. Despite their efforts, Elizabethtown scored a second goal in the 59th minute, with Kayla Myer finding the back of the net with an assist by Kirsten Navich. Wilkes responded just a minute later when Jess Shea (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) netted a goal for Wilkes in the 60th minute with a header scored off a corner taken by Elena Krajain (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional). The Colonels get eight shots off in the second half compared to just three in the first half and had five corner kick attempts in the second half. Amanda Lee (Middletown, PA/Middletown Area) added four more saves in the second half to total six for the game.
The Colonels next game will be on Wednesday, October 23, at Lycoming. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
