Late Drew Goal Spells Defeat for Wilkes Men's Soccer
EDWARDSVILLE – Two second half goals from the visiting Drew University Rangers cost the Colonels victory at Bruggeworth Field on Wednesday night, falling by a 2-1 scoreline.
Wilkes falls to 3-10-1 on the year and 0-3-0 in conference play, while Drew improves to 7-4-2 overall with a 1-2-0 record against Landmark opposition.
Xavier Guerreiro (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) opened the scoring early as he buried a penalty shot in the fifth minute to take a 1-0 lead. Momentum stayed in Wilkes' favor for the first half and held the lead through the first 45 minutes despite being outshot by the Rangers 10-6.
Drew equalized in the 58
th minute with a shot rifled into the top corner by James Cahill. The Colonel defense held off Drew's offense until the 86
th minute where Vitalii Datsyk scored the heartbreaker to give the visitors the 2-1 lead and eventual victory.
Guerreiro led Wilkes with three total shots and two on goal. In net,
Matthew Conti (Florence, NJ/Florence Township Memorial High School) made seven saves.
Nate Keller led Drew with four total shots while goaltender David Hoyt made three saves.
The Colonels return to Bruggeworth Field on Saturday, October 12 for a matchup against Juniata College on Senior Day. Kickoff of that game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
