Wilkes Women's Volleyball Cruises to 3-0 Sweep at Marywood
SCRANTON, PA – The Wilkes University women's volleyball team snapped a five-match skid in fine fashion cruising to a 3-0 sweep at Marywood University Wednesday night at the Insalaco Arena.
Wilkes improved to 4-12 overall following the road win while Marywood dropped to 3-13 on the season.
The Colonels took the match in straight sets by scores of 25-19, 25-15 and 25-15.
Wilkes jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set thanks to a pair of kills from
Sierra Hines (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Holy Redeemer) and another from
Kendra Kalp (Somerset, PA/Rockwood). The lead grew to 9-3 following another kill this time from
Ally Sheridan (Hanover Township, PA/Hanover Area). Hines added another kill followed by two Marywood service errors that kept the Colonels ahead 17-11. The teams traded points before Hines finished off a strong first set with a kill to give Wilkes a six-point win and 1-0 lead.
The second set was much closer as the teams traded leads through the match's first eight points. Wilkes earned a small three-point lead following a kill from Hines and used back-to-back Kalp kills to push the advantage to 17-8.
Jenna Baron (Nanticoke, PA/Greater Nanticoke Area) closed out the win for the Colonels with a kill prior to a bad set and service error by the visitors.
The third set looked a lot like the second before a 6-0 run from the Colonels gave them a 17-10 lead. Jenna Maron and
Ava Wahlers (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) added back-to-back kills and
Alexa Cassel (Mount Joy, PA/Lower Dauphin) got into the scoring action with a kill to close out the set and the match.
Baron led all Wilkes hitters with a team-best nine kills. Kalp added seven kills and a team-high 11 digs while Hines finished with six kills and four total blocks. Cassel and Whalers each posted four kills with Cassel also leading the passing game with a match-high 22 assists.
Wilkes remains idle through fall break before returning to Landmark Conference action on Tuesday traveling to Bethlehem, Pa. for a match against Moravian College at 7:00 p.m.
