Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey Drops Season Opener at SUNY Geneseo
GENESEO, NY - The Wilkes men's ice hockey team fell in their season opener against No. 7 ranked SUNY Geneseo on Friday night with the final score of 2-5.
The Knights opened the scoring with the lone goal of the first period. Sean Melso found the back of the net during a power play in the 14th minute. Cooper Fensterstock and Zach Pursell were credited with the assist. Geneseo added a second goal in the final minute of the second period scored by Peter Morgan and assisted by Flilip Wiberg and Alex Dameski. The Colonels netted their first goal of the game in the fifth minute of the second period, scored by Easton Stafford (Broomfield, CO) and assisted by Nick Del Gaizo (Basking Ridge, NJ).
In the third period, Purcell added a goal of his own for the Knights as well as Fensterstock. Christopher Paige (Massena, NY/) scored the second goal for the Colonels which came on a power play, with Carter Jordan (Fort Collins, CO) and Miles Harrington (McDonough, GA) recording the assists. Alex Dameski scored the fifth goal for the Knights on an empty net, assisted by Sterling Wolters.
Cam Lowe (Lancaster, MA/) led the team in shots with six in the game, followed by Joe Johnson (Midland, MI/) and Patrick Roginski (Shelby Twp., MI/) with four apiece. Johnson also recorded the team high in blocks with four, while Lowe, Lorenzo Marcolin (Saratoga Springs, NY/), and Mason Vonk (West Olive, MI/) each had three. In goal, Jack Perna (Sykesville, MD/) recorded 27 saves, yielding a .871 save percentage for the game. The Colonels had two power plays, where they recorded a total of our shots and one power play goal.
The Colonels return to action next Friday, November 8 for a 7 p.m. match against King's in Pittston.
