Strong Fourth Quarter Leads Misericordia over Wilkes Women's Basketball 59-47

DALLAS, PA – Trailing by one entering the fourth quarter, the Wilkes University women's basketball team was outscored 17-6 over the final ten minutes falling to host Misericordia University Tuesday night at the Anderson Sports Center.

Wilkes dropped to 0-2 on the season while Misericordia picked up its first win standing 1-2 overall on the year.

Wilkes led by two after one and trailed by just four at the break as Misericordia held a 30-26 lead at the half in a low scoring defensive-minded affair.

Nadia Evanosky (Dallas, PA/Dallas) gave the Colonels its first lead of the second half with 4:44 on the third quarter clock thanks to an old-fashioned three-point play. The lead grew to three after an inside score from Maliyah Warren (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) and a jumper from Delaney Bogdan (Long Valley, NJ/Mendham) as the Colonels led 40-37 with under two minutes remaining in the frame. Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) made one of two free throws with under thirty seconds left in the third, but a Misericordia three-pointer with :13 remaining closed out the scoring in the stanza giving the Cougars a 42-41 advantage heading into the fourth.

Matos tried to keep Wilkes close in the final frame with back-to-back layups but the Cougars ran off eight straight points to take its largest lead of the night up 56-46 with 2:11 left in the game. Misericordia made good on three free throws over the final 1:30 to seal the home non-league win.

Matos notched a game-high 16 points on 5-of-18 shooting adding eight rebounds. Warren finished with seven points and four boards while Madison Olguin (San Antonio, TX/Antonian Prep) and Reagan Holden (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Wilkes-Barre Area) each contributed six points and combined for four treys.

Morgan Janeski fired in a team-high 15 points for Misericordia. Emily Romanowski followed with seven points and 10 rebounds.

Wilkes is back in action this weekend when the Colonels travel to Roanoke, Va. for the Jean Beamer Tip-Off Classic hosted by Roanoke College. First game is Saturday at 6:00 p.m. against host Roanoke followed by another contest on Sunday against Randolph-Macon College at 1:00 p.m.
