Wilkes Women's Basketball Defeated by Randolph-Macon

SALEM, Va. – The Wilkes women's basketball team leave the Jean Beamer Tip-Off Classic still in search of their first win of the season, as they were bested by Randolph-Macon on Sunday afternoon 63-35 at the Cregger Center.

The Colonels fall to 0-3 overall on the young season, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 2-1.

Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) opened the scoring with a triple to give the Colonels the early lead, but a 7-0 run gave the Yellow Jackets the lead. Late in the quarter, down 11-7, another three from Dana Wartzenluft (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) brought the Colonels back within a point. At the end of a spirited first quarter, Randolph-Macon held a 15-12 lead.

Maliyah Warren (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) scored the opening bucket of the second quarter to bring the Colonels within one point once again, but a three and tip in from the Yellow Jackets opened the lead to 19-14. Wartzenluft closed the gap back to one possession with four and a half minutes to play in the half, but an 8-2 Randolph-Macon run saw them take a 27-18 lead into halftime.

The Yellow Jackets scored 23 in the third quarter to pull ahead, but five points from Matos and a make from behind the arc for Reagan Holden (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Wilkes-Barre Area) tried to keep the Colonels alive with the score 50-28. Madison Olguin (San Antonio, TX/Antonian Prep) opened the final frame with a three, but Wilkes couldn't keep up with the Yellow Jacket attack in the 63-35 loss.

Matos led the Colonels with a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Wartzenluft scored five points and Warren netted four.

McKenzie Matheny led Randolph-Macon with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Catherine Kagey distributed five assists.

The Colonels remain on the road for their next game, a Landmark Conference matchup with The University of Scranton on Wednesday, November 20. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
