Wilkes Women's Ice Hockey Picks up First Win of the Season against Suffolk 4-2

UTICA, N.Y. – The Wilkes University women's ice hockey team picked up their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon, as they bested Suffolk University 4-2 in the consolation game of the Utica University Kickoff Tournament.

The Colonels improve to 1-1 in the young season while the Rams fall to 0-2 on the season.

Wilkes lit the lamp three times in the first period, with two coming in the first five minutes. Amanda Spreadbury (Suwanee, GA/) fired home the open goal unassisted at 2:35, followed by Renee Ng's (Hong Kong, China/Mount Academy) first collegiate goal less than one minute later on the assist from Rachel Morey (Clearmont, WY). At 19:58.9 in the period, Hannah Franz (North Bay, ON) also picked up her first collegiate goal on the power play with Ng and Haylee Bouchard (Sioux Lookout, ON) picking up the assists.

Suffolk answered quickly in the second period, scoring 39 seconds into the frame thanks to Maddie Gagliano. Megan Bell (Waterloo, ON) responded for the Colonels to restore the three-goal advantage, the third Colonel of the day to pick up her maiden collegiate score. Bouchard registered her second assist of the day on the goal along with Savanna Maxon (Anchorage, AK/Alaska All-Stars).

The Rams scored once more in the second to make it 4-2, and after a goalless final frame the Colonels picked up the victory.

Four different Colonels scored the day's goals, but Bouchard was the only player to tally multiple assists with two. Jordan Ferry (Bohemia, NY/) led the team with four total shots, while Ng and Ainsley Wescott (Saco, ME/) had the team's best plus/minus at +2. Iida Laitenen and Ferry were the team leaders in faceoff wins with 12 and 10 respectively. In goal, Audrey Milne (London, ON/) blocked 28 shots in the full 60-minute performance. The Colonel defense also kept the Rams 0-for-7 on the power play.

Sam Molind led Suffolk in shots and faceoff wins with seven and nine respectively. In goal, Katelyn Michals took the decision and made 16 saves.

The Colonels return home for their next contest, a battle with cross-town rival King's College on Friday, November 8 for their home opener at the Toyota SportsPlex.
