Wilkes Women's Ice Hockey Completes Weekend Sweep with 7-1 win Over Hood College

WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's ice hockey team rolled to a weekend sweep on Sunday afternoon, defeating Hood College in Middle Atlantic Conference play 7-1 at the Toyota SportsPlex.

Wilkes improves to 5-3-0 on the year with a 4-2-0 record in MAC play. Hood falls to 2-6-0 with a 0-6-0 record in conference play.

The Colonels came out swinging in the first period, as Haylee Bouchard (Sioux Lookout, ON) scored four minutes into the game with assists from Gianna Pacilio (Franklinville, NJ) and Renee Ng (Hong Kong, China/Mount Academy). Hood responded with their first goal of the weekend at 9:21, but two minutes later Megan Bell (Waterloo, ON) restored the Colonel lead off the rebound from Tilly Wierdsma (New Hartford, CT/). With less than a minute to play in the first, Nina Hudáková's solo effort extended the Colonel lead to 3-1.

The scoring flurry quieted in the second period, but that didn't stop Jordan Ferry (Bohemia, NY) from flashing some fancy stickwork and lighting the lamp at 12:44 off the assist from Hannah Franz (North Bay, ON). On the other end of the ice, the Wilkes defense held the Blazers to only three shots in the second frame.

Wilkes ended the second period on the power play and converted it into a goal just 33 seconds into the final period as Ng found the back of the net on assists from Iida Laitinen (Jyväskylä, Finland) and Amanda Spreadbury (Suwanee, GA). Ferry found her second goal of the day at 14:15 on an assist from Hudáková, who scored three minutes later with a top corner snipe to put the final nail in the coffin for Hood 7-1.

Ferry and Hudáková led the team with two goals each, joining Lily Zingaro (Collingwood, ON) as the three Colonels that finished the day +4. Ferry led the team with nine shots, followed closely by Bouchard with eight, while Rachel Morey (Clearmont, WY) had the most wins from the faceoff circle with nine.

In net, Audrey Milne (London, ON) got the decision with 11 saves in 53 minutes of play, and Addy Olson (Naples, FL) made two in five minutes of play at the end of the game.

Reece Gall was the lone goalscorer for Hood and was one of five Blazers with two shots. Mia Cheesebrough won 13 faceoffs, while Anna Bazylewicz made five blocks. In goal, Haley Turnbull made 65 saves on 72 shots.

The Colonels return to the ice after the Thanksgiving break for a two-game series on the road against Stevenson University on Friday, December 6 and Saturday, Dec. 7. Puck drop on Friday is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
