Cobham's Last-Minute Goal Lifts Wilkes Women's Lacrosse Over Cross-Town Rival King's
WILKES-BARRE -
Maleah Cobham's (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) game-winning goal with 26 seconds left was the difference as Wilkes women's lacrosse earned a massive victory at cross-town rival King's College 12-11 on Wednesday night.
The Colonels improve to 2-5 on the year with the win, while the Monarchs fall to 1-4.
Wilkes opened the scoring early in the first quarter, as Cobham scored the opener and
Breanne Fulling (Hyde Park, NY/Franklin D. Roosevelt) doubled the lead to take a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of play. King's responded with five unanswered goals to take a 5-2 lead into the second frame.
Cobham scored again to start the second, capitalizing on a free position opportunity with 11:52 remaining in the first half.
Ava Ward (Mount Pleasant, SC/Bishop England) scored 20 seconds later to make it a 5-4 game, assisted by
Brooklyn Pedana (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) for number seven's seventh goal of the year. King's scored a goal with 9:51 remaining to retake a 6-4 lead, but Fulling scored her second goal of the day a man down to close the gap back to one goal with 8:03 remaining.
King's scored two unanswered goals to build their cushion again to 8-5, but the Colonels responded with two goals in one minute to negate that gap once again. With 1:11 remaining in the half, Ward scored her second goal of the day a man up from a free position, followed by an even strength goal 60 seconds later to make the score 8-7 at halftime.
In the third quarter it was the Monarchs who scored the first two goals of the period, but once again the Colonels fought back with an even-strength goal from
Sam Mullen (Dover, PA/York Catholic) and a man-down goal for Cobham to go into the fourth quarter down 10-9.
King's found the back of the net to start the fourth quarter and take an 11-9 lead, but the Colonels fought through adversity once more and deadlocked the game at 11 with a man-up goal from Pedana and an even-strength effort from Mullen with 5:22 left to play.
With 26 seconds left, Cobham scored the game-winning goal, assisted by Ward, and
Samantha Scott (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) made the crucial save on an ensuing free position to secure the Colonel victory.
Cobham led Wilkes in goals (4), points (4), shots on goal (7), and caused turnovers (2). Ward contributed three goals and an assist, while also sharing the team lead in points with four. Mullen and Fulling also had multi-goal games with two each. In net, Scott made 12 saves on the day.
