Wilkes Women's Lacrosse Drops Landmark Conference Opener to Moravian
 
EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes women's lacrosse team fell to Moravian University 23-2 Saturday afternoon in the program's first-ever Landmark Conference contest at Schmidt Stadium.
 
The Colonels moved to 2-6 overall and opened conference play at 0-1. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds improved to 4-4 and 1-0 in the Landmark.
 
Moravian got on the board first with five unanswered goals in the first quarter. Ava Ward (Mount Pleasant, SC/Bishop England) notched her eighth of the season, unassisted at 5:40 to cut the Colonels' deficit to four. The Greyhounds responded with six consecutive goals to end the first 15 minutes of play with an 11-1 advantage. Samantha Scott (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) tallied three saves in goal for Wilkes.
 
The guests continued to stay hot offensively in the second quarter, rattling off six goals to take a 17-1 lead into halftime. After 30 minutes, Moravian outshot Wilkes 23-7 while recording five saves to the Colonels' three.
 
The Greyhounds picked up where they left off in the second half with five unanswered goals to increase their lead to 22-1. Ward tacked on her second marker of the afternoon at 2:44 of the fourth quarter to bring the score to 22-2. Moravian added one more goal before the final buzzer to come away with a 23-2 victory.
 
Ward finished the day with two goals on three shots with three ground balls. Morgan Hettesheimer (Monroe Twp., PA/Tunkhannock Area) tied Ward with three shots on goal. Scott and Brooklynn Donia (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) combined for seven saves.
 
Alex Cherenson led the Greyhounds with nine goals and one assist for 10 points. Jackie Salvatore put up 10 points (4 G, 6 A). In net, Kayla Graef and Elle Burd put together six saves in the win.
 
The Colonels host DeSales University at Schmidt Stadium on Wednesday, March 27 at 6:00 p.m.
