Wilkes Softball Swept by Susquehanna in Home Finale

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – The Wilkes softball team were swept by the visiting Susquehanna University River Hawks in their final home games of the regular season, falling 5-1 in the first game and 4-2 in the second game at the Ralston Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.

With the losses the Colonels fall to 21-13 overall with a 7-7 conference record, while Susquehanna improve to 18-16 on the year and 8-6 in Landmark play, leaping over the Colonels in the conference standings.

Susquehanna opened the scoring in game one, taking one run in the top of the first. Hana Cross (South Brunswick, NJ/South Brunswick) equalized in the bottom of the frame with a towering home run to right field, her fifth of the week, making it a 1-1 game.

Unfortunately, the Colonel offense couldn't produce any more runs, as the River Hawks scored four unanswered runs to take the first game of the doubleheader.

Sami Hendershott (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) (7-2) was given the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with one strikeout through four innings. Hope Mullins (Midland, VA/Liberty) pitched the final three innings allowing one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts. Five Colonels registered hits with Cross' twelfth home run of the season producing the lone RBI.

Brianna Jones (5-3) pitched a complete game victory, allowing one run on five hits with eight strikeouts. Lexi Palumbo went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the team, while Nicole Wuertz led the team with two RBIs.

Lauren DeMarco (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun) and the Wilkes defense pitched four scoreless innings to start game two, but Susquehanna broke through in the fifth scoring three runs. The Colonels weren't going to go out without a fight, as Kayla Burleson (West Chester, PA/B. Reed Henderson) launched a ball to left center field in the sixth inning for a two-run home run, making it a 3-2 ballgame.

The Colonel comeback wasn't meant to be however, as the River Hawks added one more run in the seventh and completed the two-game sweep with a 4-2 win.

DeMarco (10-2) pitched a complete game in the loss, allowing four earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Olivia Dougher (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) and Megan Marshall (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) both went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the team, with Burleson picking up the team's two RBIs.

Amanda Amerman (6-5) picked up the win, pitching five innings allowing two earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Palumbo led the River Hawks offense again going 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Colonels finish their regular season on Saturday, May 4, as they travel to take on Drew University for a doubleheader with massive playoff implications. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
