TOWSON, Md. – The Wilkes women's lacrosse team were defeated at Beldon Field on Saturday afternoon, falling to Goucher College in a Landmark Conference contest 15-10.
With the loss the Colonels fall to 2-10 on the year and 0-4 in Landmark play, while the Gophers improve to 3-8 overall and 1-3 in Landmark play.
The Gophers opened the scoring, but Wilkes responded with two goals in 40 seconds, first from
Ava Ward (Mount Pleasant, SC/Bishop England) and then from
Brooklyn Pedana (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) who was assisted by
Emilee Magill (North Prairie, WI/Kettle Moraine Global). Those goals gave the Colonels their first lead of the day with 10:03 to play in the first. Goucher then equalized on a man-up goal with 3:46 left to make it a 2-2 game at the end of the first quarter.
Pedana opened the second quarter with her second goal of the game, assisted by
Mara Adams (Mehoopany, PA/Tunkhannock Area) at 13:33 to give the Colonels the lead once again. The Gophers tied the game once more with 9:49 left in the period on a man-up goal, and both teams went into halftime tied at three.
The second half saw both teams bring out the offensive fireworks, with Goucher starting the goalscoring with two unanswered to take a 5-3 lead.
Breanne Fulling (Hyde Park, NY/Franklin D. Roosevelt) scored for the Colonels with 11:53 left in the period to make it 5-4, but Goucher took advantage of another man-up opportunity to make it 6-4.
Maleah Cobham (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) and Ward scored two unanswered goals for the Colonels to bring them back level at six with 5:37 to play. The Gophers extended their lead again with two goals, but Ward completed her hat trick with one minute left to go into the fourth quarter only behind by one goal 8-7.
Goucher struck first in the fourth, but Cobham responded for her second goal of the day to make it 9-8. The Gophers then scored four unanswered goals to take their largest lead of the day 13-8, before Pedana completed her hat trick to make it 13-9 with 4:11 to play.
Morgan Hettesheimer (Monroe Twp., PA/Tunkhannock Area) scored the final Colonel goal of the day with 53 seconds remaining, assisted by Ward, but it wasn't enough to catch the Gophers.
Ward and Pedana led the Colonel offense with three goals each, but Ward's assist gave her the team-high in points with four. The graduate student also led the team in ground balls, caused turnovers and draw controls with five in each category. Pedana led the team with eight total shots and five on goal. In net,
Brooklynn Donia (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) made six saves.
Emily Burk was Goucher's leading goal scorer with five goals, and Amelia Lazzini led with three assists. Burk, Charlotte Bloom, and Lucy Covington led the team with three ground balls each, and Katherine Luetgens led with seven draw controls. In goal, Sydney Lewis made eight saves.
The Colonels return to action on Wednesday, April 10 as they welcome Lycoming College to Schmidt Stadium for a 6:00 p.m. matchup with the Warriors.
