Wilkes Men's Soccer Defeats Misericordia 2-1

DALLAS - The Wilkes men's soccer team defeated Misericordia on the road Saturday afternoon with a final score of 2-1.

The first half was an even battle between the two teams, with each team recording one goal. Although the Cougars had more shots in the half with seven, Matthew Conti (Florence, NJ/Florence Township Memorial High School) was solid in the net with two saves on the three shots on goal. The Colonel goal in the first half was scored by Giovanni Mazzola (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall High School) in the 44th minute with an assist by Alex Lacson (Manassas, VA/Osbourn Park).

The Colonels came out strong in the second half, securing a second goal in the second minute of the second half. The goal was scored by Landon Kelly (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus Senior High School), with another assist by Lacson. Misericordia notched 15 shots in the half, with Conti recording seven saves and keeping the Cougars tied down at one goal. Wilkes totaled six shots on goal throughout the game compared to Misericordia's 22, but were able to produce the win for the Colonels. Mazzola, Kelly and Xavier Guerrerio recorded shots in the game for the Colonels. 

The team will be back on the road on Tuesday, September 17 to face Swarthmore College in a 7 p.m. matchup.
