Wilkes Field Hockey Falls in Overtime on Senior Day against Western Connecticut State

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes field hockey team fell just short of victory at Schmidt Stadium on Saturday afternoon, losing to Western Connecticut State 2-1 on Senior Day.

Wilkes falls to 1-4 on the year after the loss while Western Connecticut State improves to 3-3.

The Colonels dominated the early going, firing off eight shots in the first quarter with six penalty corners but couldn't find the back of the cage. Against the run of play, the Wolves took the lead late in the first as Jaelyn Moulton scored at 11:02 to give Western Connecticut a 1-0 advantage that they held onto for a majority of the game.

Allysa Pardue (Elkton, MD/Bohemia Manor) equalized for the Colonels in the fourth quarter at 56:15, as the Colonels once again peppered the Western Connecticut goalkeeper and finally found the breakthrough and forced overtime.

Unfortunately, it would be Western Connecticut who scored the golden goal at 64:44, scored by Regan Schoen, ending the game and giving the Wolves the win.

The Colonels outshot the Wolves 25-8 with 10 on target compared to six for the visitors. Wilkes also earned 17 penalty corners compared to four for Western Connecticut.

Four Colonels registered four total shots, but Olivia Gayoski (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West) and Bridget Rosenfeld (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) led the team with two shots on goal each. In goal, Olivia Wickel (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) made four saves.

Schoen led the Wolves with three shots, with the game winning goal, while goaltender Gracie Bomboy made eight saves in net.

Before the game, Wilkes recognized seniors Rosenfeld, Lexie Nevel (Nescopeck, PA/Berwick), Morgan Millard (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg Area), and Kellie Scott (Northport, ME/Kents Hill) as a part of the Senior Day festivities.

The team returns to Schmidt Stadium tomorrow for their next game, looking to rebound against Elmira College on Alumni Day at 12:00 p.m.
