Wilkes Men's Soccer Earns Hard-Fought Draw Against Penn State Harrisburg
EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes men's soccer team split the spoils of a physical contest with Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday night, as the scoreboard read 1-1 after 90 minutes at Bruggeworth Field.
Wilkes moves to 1-2-1 on the year while the Lions move to 2-0-1 early in the season.
Penn State Harrisburg dominated the first half, registering seven shots while holding the Colonels without one in the first 45 minutes of play. In the 58
th minute, the Lions drew a penalty and Jaden Longdon finished the spot kick to give Penn State the lead.
In the 65
th minute,
Herbert Ramirez (Highstown, NJ/Highstown) was fouled on the edge of the box. After a long deliberation by the officials, the senior was given a penalty kick and a chance to equalize the game. Unfortunately, his shot was saved by goalkeeper Hossam Aly and the Lions retained their one-goal advantage.
With 10 minutes left to play, the Colonels earned a free kick on the outside of the box, and up stepped Xavier Guerrero to once again level the game, and he would not miss this chance. The ball soared across the face of goal and rippled the top-right corner of the net to make it a 1-1 game. Neither team would get another chance to take the victory, and the game ended tied at one goal each.
Ramirez was a super-sub for the Colonels, leading the team with two shots, both going on target. Guererro was the lone goalscorer with two total shots and one on target. In goal,
Matthew Conti (Florence, NJ/Florence Township Memorial High School) made seven saves.
Tai Bhalla led Penn State Harrisburg with two shots on goal, and Aly made two saves on the night in goal.
The Colonels return to action this Saturday, September 7 for a 3:30 p.m. matchup against Arcadia University on Lace Up for Pediatric Cancer Day at Bruggeworth Field.
