Wilkes Field Hockey Upended at Alvernia 5-1
 
READING, PA – Host Alvernia University scored four unanswered goals over the final two quarters on way to a 5-1 non-conference victory over the Wilkes University field hockey team Saturday afternoon.
 
Wilkes slipped to 1-2 overall following the road defeat while Alvernia improved to 2-1 on the season.
 
Lexie Nevel (Nescopeck, PA/Berwick) gave Wilkes a 1-0 lead with a goal 7:33 into the first quarter. Ava Michael answered back for the Golden Wolves tying the game at one at the 12:33 mark of the first.
 
The game went scoreless over the second quarter as the teams went to the break tied at one.
 
From there it was all Alvernia as Kelysey McClintock scored the eventual game-winner five minutes into the third quarter before the Golden Wolves added three more insurance tallies over the final 25 minutes of the contest.
 
Alvernia held a 22-4 shot advantage throughout while garnering six penalties corners to the Colonels' one attempt.
 
Olivia Wickel (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) finished with a career-best ten saves in goalie for Wilkes in the defeat.
 
Wilkes returns to play Wednesday with a road non-league matchup at cross-town rival King's College at 4:00 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium.
