Wilkes Women's Basketball Falls to No. 17 Elizabethtown at Landmark Palestra Gameday
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Wilkes women's basketball team competed in the opening contest of the Landmark Conference Palestra Gameday on Sunday afternoon, falling to No. 17 ranked Elizabethtown College 83-54.
The Colonels fall to 0-13 on the year and 0-6 in Landmark play, while Elizabethtown improve to 11-2 on the year and 5-1 in conference play.
The Blue Jays struck first and took an early 7-2 lead, before a layup from
Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) and two free throws from
Nadia Evanosky (Dallas, PA/Dallas) made it a one possession game. However, a late eight-point run helped Elizabethtown take a 27-14 lead into the second quarter.
Carolyn Lundy (Fair Haven, NJ/St. John Vianney) led the Colonels with a team-high five points in the frame.
The Colonels matched the Blue Jays shot for shot early in the second quarter, with a
Delaney Bogdan (Long Valley, NJ/Mendham) triple giving the Colonels a 7-6 scoring advantage in the period. From there, a 17-6 run gave Elizabethtown a 50-27 lead at the half, connecting on four shots from beyond the arc.
Wilkes opened the third quarter strong with an 8-3 scoring run, with
Julianna Askins (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) contributing five points. A 16-6 run in the back half of the frame gave Elizabethtown a 69-41 lead going into the final frame.
The two teams traded baskets in the fourth quarter, with the Colonel defense holding the Blue Jays to only five field goals in the period.
Maliyah Warren (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) represented six of the team's 13 fourth quarter points.
Matos led the team with 13 points while Evanosky cleaned up 12 boards, the most of any team. Lundy doubled her career high with 10 points on the day, going 3-3 from the field, 2-2 from three, and making both of her free throw attempts.
The Colonels return to the Marts Center for their next contest, kicking off a two-game homestand against Drew University on Wednesday, January 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
