Wilkes Women's Basketball Bested by Susquehanna

WILKES-BARRE – A strong second half effort pushed the visiting Susquehanna University River Hawks over the Wilkes University women's basketball team at the Marts Center Saturday afternoon, falling 83-57.

Wilkes falls to 0-15 overall and 0-8 in Landmark Conference competition, while the River Hawks improve to 8-7 overall and 5-3 in conference play.

Two free throws from Nadia Evanosky (Dallas, PA/Dallas) got the scoring started, but Susquehanna put their mark on the game with a make from beyond the arc to put the visitors ahead. A 5-2 run after the make grew the River Hawk lead, but more free-throw discipline from the Colonels started a 4-0 run from the stripe to tie the game at eight. The visitors then went on a 10-3 run to close the quarter with an 18-11 lead.

Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) opened the scoring in the second quarter with a layup, but a 5-3 run by the River Hawks over the first three minutes of the quarter extended their lead to double-digits, 25-14. Wilkes responded with a 6-0 run to cut the gap to five points with six minutes to play in the half. The Colonels matched the River Hawks down the stretch to keep it a two-possession game, but two triples from the visitors pushed their lead in the last 1:23 of game time pushed their lead to 37-28 at the half.

The Colonels were unable to keep up with the Susquehanna offense in the second half, being outscored 46-29 in the third and fourth quarters in defeat.

Matos led the Colonels with 15 points and two assists. Reagan Holden (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Wilkes-Barre Area) also finished in double-digit scoring with 10 points. Evanosky led the team on the boards with eight rebounds. First year Delaney Bogdan (Long Valley, NJ/Mendham) was the Colonels' top contributor off the bench with seven points, a career high.

Kenzie Selvaggi led the River Hawks with 25 points, going 5-7 from three. Carly George led in rebounds with 11, while Grace Meehan had a team-high five assists.

The Colonels hit the road for their next contest, a Landmark Conference matchup against Moravian University on Wednesday, January 22 at 7:00 p.m.
