Wilkes Women's Basketball Drops Overtime Contest at Moravian
BETHLEHEM, PA –
Julianna Askins (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) poured in a career-high 20 points leading three Colonels in double figures and
Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) banked in a three-pointer to send the game to overtime only to see host Moravian University outscore Wilkes14-9 over the extra session to post a 76-71 Landmark Conference victory Wednesday night at Johnston Hall.
Wilkes dropped to 0-16 overall and 0-9 in Landmark games while Moravian improved to 4-12 overall and 2-7 in league contests.
The teams traded blows throughout the game with 20 lead changes and 18 ties over the first 40 minutes of action. With Moravian leading 57-55,
Madison Robel (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) tied the game scoring on a driving layup with 1:58 left in regulation. After a three-pointer on the following Moravian possession,
Reagan Holden (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Wilkes-Barre Area) scored in the paint to cut the deficit to 60-59 with :12 remaining. Wilkes fouled on the next possession and Moravian made good on both free throws to push the lead back to three setting up the final heroics from Matos.
Matos then banked home the game-tying three-pointer with three seconds left and sent the game to the extra period in the process.
Wilkes scored five of its nine points in the overtime frame in the first two minutes of play as Askins drilled a trey and followed with two free throws as the Colonels led 67-62 with 3:42 on the clock. Moravian answered back with seven straight points to take a 68-67 lead with 1:40 left. Matos made one of two from the charity stripe after being fouled tying the game at 68 before a three-point play pushed Moravian ahead 71-68 with 1:09 remaining. After Robel drove the lane for another score, Moravian added a bucket with :21 left as the hosts led 73-70 with :21 left.
From there Holden was fouled and made one of two free throws before Moravian held on for the win sinking three of foul shots from the foul line with under :15 remaining.
Askins finished 5-for-12 from the floor including four treys on way to her career-best 20 tallies. Matos followed with 12 points and nine rebounds while Robel chipped in 11 points and six boards.
Wilkes continues its Landmark road stretch Saturday when the Colonels travel to Catholic University for a matchup at 2:00 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
