Wilkes Women's Basketball Bested by No. 20 Catholic
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Wilkes University women's basketball team were defeated on the road Saturday afternoon, falling to No. 20 ranked Catholic University 75-28 at Franny Murray Court in Landmark Conference action.
The Colonels fall to 0-17 on the year and 0-10 in Landmark play, while the Cardinals improve to 15-2 overall and 8-2 in conference play.
The Cardinal offense started strong with a 26-point first quarter, holding the Colonels to only one basket scored by
Julianna Askins (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle). The senior guard contributed five of Wilkes' nine points in the second quarter as they went into the halftime break down 39-11.
Wilkes scored more points in the second half than they did in the first, with
Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) scoring a team-high seven in the final 20 minutes. In the end though, Catholic was able to seal the victory.
Askins led the team in scoring with 10 points, her second consecutive game in double-digits. First year duo
Dana Wartzenluft (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) and
Maliyah Warren (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) picked up seven and six boards respectively, both game and career highs.
The Colonels return home to the Marts Center for a three-game homestand beginning on Wednesday, January 29 as they host Lycoming College at 7:00 p.m.
