Wilkes Basketball Ready for Road Matchup at Catholic on Saturday

WILKES-BARRE - The Wilkes University men's and women's basketball teams will be traveling this Saturday as they take on Catholic in their second meeting of the season. The women's game begins at 2 p.m. with the men following at 4 p.m.

Men's Preview

The Colonels picked up a win against Moravian, snapping the Greyhounds seven game win streak by a score of 91-66. The men are now sitting 12-4 overall and 6-3 in conference play.

Regaining the top spot  in the conference in scoring is Lucas Lesko (Northampton, PA/Northampton), who is averaging 23.2 points per game. Cayden Merrifield (Scranton, PA/West Scranton), who is 12th in the conference in scoring, follows behind Lesko, and is averaging 14.1 points per game. Lesko is second in the conference in rebounds with an average of 7.6 per game and Jack Argento (Hershey, PA/Hershey) sits in ninth with an average of 5.8 rebounds per game. Merrifield leads the team in assists and is third in the Landmark with an average of 4.6 assists per game. Joey Zvorsky (New Cumberland, PA/Cedar Cliff) follows, averaging 2.8 assists per game and is ranked ninth in the conference. Lesko is second in the conference in blocked shots with an average of 1.3 per game and Argento leads the team in steals, averaging 1.6 per game. 

The team averages 79.3 points per game offensively, leaving them ranked third in the conference in scoring. The Colonels are shooting .462 from the field, .325 on three point shot attempts and .676 from the free throw line. They lead the conference in combined team rebounds, with an average of 40.2 per game. 

The Cardinals enter the game with a 13-3 overall record and are 8-1 in conference play, having most recently come off an 80-62 win over Goucher on Wednesday.

Sean Neylon leads the team in scoring, averaging 17.3 points per game, followed by Brian Herbert with an average of 14.9 points per game. Jamie Nitamoah leads in rebounds with an average of 6.5 per game and Dan Buckley leads the team in assists with an average of 3.9 per game. Nitamoah also leads the team in blocked shots with an average of 0.8 per game as well as in steals with an average of 2.1 steals per game.

Offensively, the Cardinals are fifth in the conference in scoring, averaging 74.6 points per game and are shooting .478 from the field. On three point shot attempts, they are shooting .401 and from the free throw line they are shooting .738.

Women's Preview

The Colonels are currently 0-16 overall and 0-9 in conference play, coming off a tough overtime loss against Moravian on Wednesday night. 

In scoring, Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) leads the team and is ranked fifth in the conference with an average of 15.3 points per game. Nadia Evanosky (Dallas, PA/Dallas) follows with an average of 7.5 points per game. Evanosky and Matos also lead in rebounds, with Evanosky at a 7.8 rebound average per game and Matos at 7.4, leaving them at fifth and seventh in the conference. Madison Robel (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) is 12th in the conference in blocked shots, averaging 0.7 per game, and Evanosky follows, also with an average of 0.7 blocks per game. Evanosky is also second in the conference in steals with an average of 3.5 per game.

The Colonels are currently averaging 47.1 points per game, and are shooting .278 from the field. On three point shot attempts, they are shooting .193 and from the free throw line they are shooting .644. In combined team rebounds, Wilkes is averaging 36.4 rebounds per game. 

The Cardinals will be entering the contest with a 14-2 overall record and are 7-2 in conference play, most recently defeating Goucher by a score of 96-58 on Wednesday.
