Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey Ties Alvernia After Double Overtime in Friday Night Contest

READING, PA - The Wilkes men's ice hockey team put up a strong fight against Alvernia in their first of two games this weekend, with the game remaining tied after double overtime and the Colonels picking up the extra point by winning in the shootout.

Christian Blomquist (Wauwatosa, WI) opened the scoring in the first period for the Colonels, with Alvernia's Frazer Dodd responding in the second period with a goal for the Golden Wolves. A power play goal by Miles Harrington (McDonough, GA) later in the second regained the lead for Wilkes, but Owen Noel scored the equalizer for Alvernia on a power play late in the third period to tie the game and send it to overtime. Picking up assists for the Colonels were Daniel Nau (Wake Forest, NC), Christopher Paige (Massena, NY), and Patrick Roginski (Shelby Twp., MI).

The Colonels recorded five shots and Jack Perna (Sykesville, MD) made five saves in the first overtime, but the game remained scoreless, leading the teams to a shootout. Nick Swain (Jackson, NJ) found the back of the net in his shootout attempt to give the Colonels the advantage. Two missed shootout attempts by the Golden Wolves and a miss by Roginski led Matt Carlson (Delmar, NY) to the winning shootout goal.

Harrington and Blomquist led the team in shots, each recording four apiece. Roginski, Carlson and Swain followed with three each. Nate Terski (North Grafton, MA), Joe Johnson (Midland, MI), Cole Jungwirth (Bloomington, MN) and Mason Vonk (West Olive, MI) each recorded a team high three blocks during the game. Jungwirth and Vonk led in plus minus, each ending the game with a plus one, and Nau went 9-18 in the faceoff circle. In goal, Perna made a total of 36 saves, leaving him with a 1.85 save percentage.

The Colonels will be facing the Golden Wolves again tomorrow, with puck drop scheduled from 4 p.m.
