Wilkes Women's Basketball Drops Close Contest Against Lycoming

WILKES-BARRE - The Wilkes women's basketball team fell to Lycoming in a close contest on Wednesday night with a final score of 64-74.

Following the first quarter of play, the Colonels led the Warriors with a score of 15-12. Leading in points was Delaney Bogdan (Long Valley, NJ/Mendham) with four, followed by Julianna Askins (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) and Dana Wartzenluft (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) with three. Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) led in steals with four. The Colonels went 5-22 from the field, 2-9 on three point shots and 3-4 from the free throw line. 

At the half, the Colonels trailed the Warriors by just two points with a score of 29-31. Bogdan added two more points for six total along with Maliyah Warren (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville). Matos led in rebounds with six total and Nadia Evanosky (Dallas, PA/Dallas) followed with five. Matos also led in steals with five total and Evanosky had the team high in blocks with two. In the second quarter, the Colonels shot 6-19 from the field, 1-11 on three point shots and 1-2 from the free throw line.

At the end of the third quarter, the Colonels were behind the Warriors by nine points, with the score being 43-52. Askins took the lead in scoring, with 12 total points in the game. Matos added three rebounds for nine total and Evanosky also added three for nine total. Matos also added a steal for seven total and Warren, Matos, and Evanosky ended the third with two assists. In the third, the Colonels shot 5-15 from the field and 4-10 on three point shots. 

The game concluded with just a 10 point difference with the Colonels falling 64-74. Askins finished with 12 points for the team high, followed by Wartzenluft with 11. Matos, Warren, and Evanosky ended the game with nine rebounds apiece, and Matos finished with seven total steals. Askins recorded two blocks and Warren, Evanosky, and Matos each tallied three assists throughout the game. 

The Colonels will be at home again this Saturday, February 1, for a 2 p.m. game against Juniata.
