Wilkes Women's Basketball Drops Road Contest at Alvernia 60-39
READING, Pa. – The Wilkes University women's basketball team finished their non-conference schedule Saturday afternoon, falling to the Alvernia University Golden Wolves 60-39 on the road at Jack McCloskey Court.
Alvernia improved to 6-5 on the year with the win while Wilkes dropped to 0-11.
Alvernia took the early lead after scoring six of the first seven points of the afternoon. The Colonels started to chip away at the Golden Wolves' advantage, but the hosts held a 14-8 advantage after the first quarter.
The Golden Wolves maintained control through the second quarter to take a 27-13 lead into the locker room break. The Colonels started the second half hot, scoring five of the first seven points of the frame with a three-pointer by
Carolyn Lundy (Fair Haven, NJ/St. John Vianney) and layup by
Julianna Askins (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle). However, the Colonels headed into the fourth quarter down 45-25 even with a late triple from
Emma Stout (Bangor, PA/Bangor) and layup from
Maliyah Warren (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville).
The teams traded baskets in the fourth quarter to close out the contest.
Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) and Stout represented 10 of the Colonels 14 fourth quarter points, their highest-scoring quarter of the afternoon.
Matos led the Colonels with 14 points and 14 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. The Junior also added a team-high three assists. Stout also netted eight points to assist Wilkes' offensive efforts as well.
Jennah DeGout led the Golden Wolves with 20 points and 16 rebounds. Jordyn Ingelido led the hosts with four assists.
The Colonels get set to face Landmark Conference foe Goucher College in their next contest on Wednesday, January 8, their first game at the Marts Center in the new year. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
