Wilkes Women's Volleyball Drops Home Match Against Susquehanna 3-1
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Wilkes women's volleyball team dropped their home match against Landmark opponent, Susquehanna University, Friday evening, three sets to one.
After tonight's match, Wilkes falls to 11-10 overall and 1-2 in conference while Susquehanna improves to 5-13 overall and 1-0 in conference.
The River Hawks started the night hot, as they climbed to a 9-4 lead over Wilkes, but with kills from
Ally Sheridan (Hanover Township, PA/Hanover Area) and
Abby Dornblaser (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown), the Colonels were able to get within one point of Susquehanna. Susquehanna continued to slowly extend their lead over Wilkes, until a 7-0 run flipped the set into the Colonels favor. Sheridan led the attack in the run contributing four of the seven kills. From there, Dornblaser put down three big kills to end the 25-21.
With momentum on their side, Wilkes pushed to a 10-7 lead at the start of set two with multiple Colonels contributing kills. A 5-2 run helped the River Hawks tie the game at 12. Wilkes fought back, but a 7-1 and 4-2 run secured the set win for the River Hawks, 25-23.
Throughout set three, Wilkes traded points with the River Hawks, but a 3-0 and 3-1 run from the Colonels gave them the edge over Susquehanna (18-15). Susquehanna answered back with a 3-0 run of their own to tie the set. The River Hawks finished the set (25-20) with six unanswered points.
In the final set of the night, Susquehanna pushed to an 11-5 lead, and extended their lead with help from a 6-3 run. Wilkes chipped away, with Leon and Dornblaser each adding kills, but ultimately, Wilkes fell short and Susquehanna finalized the set, 25-18.
Leading the attack for the Colonels was Sheridan with 16 kills, a new career high, while Leon and Dornblaser each had 12.
Rachael Anderson (Canmore, AB/West Island College) led the passing game with 36 assists. Leon posted 22 digs for the Colonels, with
Charlize Leukus (York haven, PA/Red Land) right behind her recording 21 digs.
Kyndall Mason and Stella Robinson each recorded 13 kills for the River Hawks, while Elliott Schleicher led the assists with 36 and Jessica Sack had 28 digs.
The Colonels are back in the Marts Center on Saturday, Oct. 11, for their tri-match against Elizabethtown College and Montclair State University at 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
