Wilkes Men's Soccer Falls to No. 14 Scranton 5-0

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes University men's soccer team went up against the No. 14 University of Scranton on Tuesday night at Bruggeworth Field, falling to the Royals 5-0.

The Colonels drop to 1-11-4 overall with the loss and 0-5-2 in Landmark play, while the Royals improve to 11-0-4 and 6-0-1 in Landmark play.

Scranton's first goal came less than 10 minutes into the game. After a handball in the penalty area at 9:04 gave the Royals a penalty kick, Alex Kozdron hammered the ball past goalkeeper Landon Keller (Provo, UT/Timpview) to make it 1-0.

That score held going into halftime, but the Colonels' big chance to get on the board came in the 33rd minute. A Royal turnover deep in their own territory gave Elhadji Kallo (Silver Spring, MD/Albert Einstein) an open shot to tie the game, but his shot went just wide left of the net.

Scranton's offense found their rhythm quickly in the second half. At 51:52, a centering pass from Tyler Colton set up a James Mayo goal to make it 2-0 Royals. However, less than a minute later Giovanni Mazzola (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall High School) had a good look of his own to cut the deficit in half, but his shot went wide right.

The Royals put the game away for good at 71:38 when Justin Curran scored his first goal of the season to make it 3-0, and then they tacked on two more goals afterwards to reach the final score of 5-0.

Scranton as a team outshot Wilkes 19-8, including 10-2 in shots on goal. Four different players scored goals for the Royals, but leading the charge was Curran, who finished with two goals and one assist on the night. Luke Ferrarese (Bel Air, MD/Calvert Hall College) led the Colonels in shots taken with three, including one on goal, and Keller made five saves in goal for Wilkes.

With two games remaining in the regular season, the Colonels now travel to Moravian University for their next game on Saturday, Oct. 25. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m.
