Wilkes Women's Soccer Battles Back with Three Straight Goals to Win 3-2 at Moravian
SHAWNEE ON DELAWARE, PA – The Wilkes University women's soccer team scored three unanswered goals battling back from two goals down on way to a 3-2 Landmark Conference victory at Moravian University Saturday afternoon at John Makuvek Field.
Wilkes moved to 6-6-4 overall and earned an important three points at 2-3-3 in Landmark play. Moravian fell to 3-11-2 and 2-5-1 in the conference. The Colonels now sit in sole possession of seventh place and just one point back of the final postseason spot with one game remaining.
Moravian jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals at 3:47 and 16:06 to take an earlier 2-0 lead in the first half. Wilkes settled down and responded in the 34
th minute when
Sarah Straup (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) notched her team-high eight goal of the season off a pass from
Morgan Sweed (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen).
Trailing 2-1 midway through the second half, Straup struck again, this time a cross from
Maggie Allen (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) and the first-year deposited a shot into the back of the net tying the game at two with 20 minutes left in the match.
From there it was
Grace Alderson (Byram, NJ/Lenape Valley Regional) who played hero as the rookie blasted a 35-yard shot past the Greyhounds keeper to give the Colonels their first lead of the contest which they would hold onto the final 14:22 left on the clock.
Wilkes held a commanding 15-5 shot advantage while garnering six corner kicks to Moravian's five attempts.
Delaney Yaracs (Butler, PA/Butler) earned the win in net for Wilkes making one save. Caitlyn Philips finished with two saves in goal for Moravian.
Wilkes closes out Landmark play on Tuesday when the Colonels host Lycoming College at 7:00 p.m. at Bruggeworth Field in a chance to earn a spot in the Landmark Conference Tournament.
