WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Wilkes University women's volleyball team traveled to the nation's capital to take on the Catholic University Cardinals and Salisbury University Seagulls, falling to both teams by a score of 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Both losses drop the Colonels to 11-9 on the season overall, and 1-1 in the Landmark Conference.
Game 1: Catholic 3, Wilkes 0
The Cardinals took an early 4-3 lead in the first set, then went on an 11-3 run to take a commanding 15-6 lead and never looked back. Catholic led by as much as 13 at one point (23-10) and took the set 25-12.
In set two the Colonels fell behind early once again 8-2, and the Cardinals extended that lead to 24-12 to reach set point. Wilkes did score six-straight points after this to make it interesting, but Catholic held on for the 25-18 win to take a 2-0 set lead.
Looking for the sweep, the Cardinals took control early in set three with a 10-3, but the Colonels stayed within striking distance with the score at 19-15 Catholic late. Wilkes then scored five of the next seven points to make it a 21-20, but Catholic scored the final four points of the set to secure the win 25-20.
Kendra Kalp (Somerset, PA/Rockwood) finished the match with eight kills and six digs. Rachael Anderson (Canmore, AB/West Island College) led Wilkes with 13 assists, and Annalyse Santowasso (Middlesex, NJ/Rutgers Prep) led the team in digs with nine. Both Julliette Cummings and Erin Faughnan finished with double-digit kills for the Cardinals. Cummings had 13 kills and Faughnan had 11.
As a team, the Colonels finished with a .110 attack percentage, while the Cardinals finished with a .371 attack percentage.Â
Game 2: Salisbury 3, Wilkes 0
Looking for a bounce back performance against the Seagulls, the Colonels matched their opponent through the first 20 points with the score tied 10-10. Salisbury managed to pull away late to make it 22-17, but Wilkes responded with four-straight points to make it 22-21. However, the Seagulls closed out the set with back-to-back kills from Kiley McTaggart to win it 25-22.
In set two, the Seagulls jumped out to a huge 15-5 lead. They increased that lead to 20-8 later on, but the Colonels fought back with a 10-3 run to make it 23-18. Salisbury scored the final two points of the set to win it 25-18 and take a 2-0 lead.
Salisbury picked up right where they left off in set three as they led 8-4 early. They kept that lead throughout most of the set as it was 21-16 late, but once again the Colonels put together a 4-0 run to make it a one-point game. However, the Seagulls scored four of the final five points to win set three 25-21.
Ally Sheridan (Hanover Township, PA/Hanover Area) finished the match with 10 kills and five digs for the Colonels, and Kalp was right behind her with seven kills and a team-leading 10 digs. Anderson once again led the team in assists with 20. As for the Seagulls, McTaggart led them in kills with 16. Julie Altieri led the Seagulls in assists with 27, and Annabelle Weis led them in digs with 16.
The Colonels return to action on Friday, Oct. 10 against Susquehanna University at home. The match begins at 7 p.m.
