Wilkes Women's Basketball Falls at Centenary in First Road Contest
Hackettstown, NJ -- Vatijah Davis scored a game-high 35 points and added 12 rebounds to lead host Centenary University to a 77-47 victory over the Wilkes University women's basketball team Tuesday night in the John M. Reeves Student Center.
Wilkes fell to 1-1 overall following its first road contest of the season. Centenary remained unbeaten on the year at 2-0.
Davis scored early and often notching 12 of the Cyclones 14 first quarter points as the hosts led 14-11 after one period. A layup from
Carolyn Lundy (Fair Haven, NJ/St. John Vianney) and three-pointer from
Anya Richet (Plymouth, PA/Wyoming Valley West) kept the Colonels close to end the frame.
Centenary used an 8-0 run to start the second quarter to take its largest lead of the game at 22-11 midway through the stanza. The lead grew to as many as 14 points before
Maliyah Warren (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) drilled a three-pointer to cut the deficit to nine with 39 seconds left until the break. Centenary added a bucket and free throw on its final possession to take a 35-23 lead to the break.
Centenary continued to go to Davis and she delivered as the hosts took a 57-38 lead after three quarters of play thanks to four straight scores from Davis to end the frame.Â
The Cyclones put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter, outscoring Wilkes 20-9 on way to the non-league victory.
Warren was the lone double figure scorer for Wilkes finishing with 15 points and six rebounds.
Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) followed with eight points.
Davis was efficient throughout the game for Centenary shooting 13-for-17 from the floor, 3-for-4 from long range and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line on way to the 35-point effort. Kayla Sampong added nine points and four assists.
Centenary attacked the basket on offense outscoring Wilkes 40-18 in the paint.
Wilkes is back on the court Friday when the Colonels host Saint Elizabeth University at 6:00 p.m. at the Marts Center.
