Fourth Quarter Surge Pushes Wilkes Women's Basketball Past Saint Elizabeth 68-53
WILKES-BARRE – A 25-point fourth quarter helped Wilkes women's basketball pick up their second win of the young season Friday night, defeating the Saint Elizabeth University Eagles 68-53 at the Marts Center.
With the win Wilkes improves to 2-1 overall while Saint Elizabeth falls to 1-2.
The Colonels started hot, pulling out an 11-2 lead in the first five minutes of action. The dynamic duo of
Maliyah Warren (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) and
Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) helped Wilkes maintain the lead at the end of the quarter, with Warren scoring the team's first four buckets and Matos scoring eight points over the final half of the first to take a 22-14 lead into the second.
In the second, the Eagles outscored the Colonels 16-13, closing the gap to as few as three points.
Carolyn Lundy's (Fair Haven, NJ/St. John Vianney) layup in the final minute sent Wilkes into the break with a five-point advantage, up 35-30.
Saint Elizabeth began the third on a 9-2 run that saw them take their first lead of the day, 39-37, with six minutes to play in the frame. Lundy equalized for the Colonels at 39 after a few minutes of tough defense, and it was
Madison Robel (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) from the stripe who gave the Colonels the lead back 40-39. Another Lundy score, this time off a steal, and another Robel free throw gave Wilkes a 43-41 lead heading into the fourth.
In the final quarter the Colonel offense exploded, going on a 13-5 scoring run to push the lead back out to double-digits 56-46. Two consecutive turnovers allowed scores from Matos and
Anya Richet (Plymouth, PA/Wyoming Valley West) in the run. The team didn't take their foot off the gas, going on another scoring run in the final five minutes 12-7 to take the 68-53 win at home.
Warren led the Colonels with a 23-point, 10 rebound double-double, both team highs. Matos was the other Colonel in double digit scoring, dropping 19 with seven boards and a team-high five assists. Lundy contributed nine of 22 bench points for Wilkes, while Matos and
Charlotte Taylor (Somerville, NJ/Somerville) shared a team-high four steals each.
Ahjionae Cobb led the Eagles with a double-double of her own, scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 boards in a full 40-minute effort. Elyssa Russo led the team with five assists.
The Colonels now begin a three-game road trip, beginning with their first taste of Landmark Conference action this year as they head to Lycoming College on Wednesday, November 19. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
