Wilkes Women's Basketball Falls to Lycoming in Landmark Opener

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The Wilkes University women's basketball team lost their first Landmark Conference game of the season to the Lycoming College Warriors 71-40 Wednesday night at Lamade Gym.

The defeat drops the Colonels to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in Landmark play.

Charlotte Taylor (Somerville, NJ/Somerville) got the first points of the game for Wilkes with a layup just 22 seconds into the first quarter, but that would be the team's only made field goal through the first 10 minutes of action. The Colonels shot just 1-22 from the field in the first and were held scoreless for nearly nine minutes as the Warriors jumped out to a big 18-3 lead.

The Lycoming lead increased to as much as 21 halfway through the second quarter, but the Colonels chipped away at the deficit and ultimately won the second quarter 19-18 and trailed 36-22 at halftime.

The third quarter was mostly back-and-forth as the two teams traded buckets throughout until the Warriors pushed their lead back up to 20 with a buzzer-beating three-pointer, and then Lycoming won the fourth quarter 19-8 to reach the final score of 71-40.

Wilkes as a team shot just 19.1% from the field and 22.6% (7-31) from beyond the arc, while Lycoming shot 39.1% from the field and 36% (9-25) from three. The Warriors also outrebounded the Colonels 55-46.

Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) was the leading scorer for the Colonels with eight points on 2-13 shooting to go along with eight rebounds. Meanwhile, the Warriors had three players in double-digits with Kami Abdo leading the way with 18 points, five rebounds, and seven assists. Allison Fisher was right behind her with 16 points, seven rebounds, and six assists, while Ann-Marie McMurtrie had a near double-double of 11 points and nine rebounds.

Wilkes stays on the road for their next game against the Moravian University Greyhounds on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 4 p.m.
