ANNVILLE, Pa. - The Wilkes University men's ice hockey team bounced back with a 4-1 win over the Lebanon Valley College Flying Dutchmen Saturday afternoon at the Hershey Arena to split the weekend series.
The Colonels improve to 4-1-1 on the season and 3-1 in conference play, while the Dutchmen fall to 1-4-0 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Looking to avoid a weekend sweep, the Colonels came out aggressive in the first period as they outshot the Dutchmen 15-8. For most of the period they were unable to score until Trevor Belak (Pittsburgh, PA) scored his first collegiate goal at the 3:54 mark to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead going into the second period.
Wilkes extended their lead to 2-0 when Cam Lowe (Lancaster, MA/) earned an unassisted goal just over four minutes into the period, and two minutes later Christian Blomquist (Wauwatosa, WI/) made it 3-0 with a goal off an assist from Jack Lee (Naperville, IL) and Matt Carlson (Delmar, NY/). However, the Dutchmen were able to stop the bleeding with a power play goal from Mason Proskin with 6:48 to play in the second, so the Colonels took a two-goal lead going into the final period.
The Colonel defense maintained that lead all the way to the final minutes of the regulation, holding the Dutchmen to just seven shots in the period, and Lee capped off the afternoon with an empty net goal with 1:58 remaining to reach the final score.
As a team, Wilkes outshot LVC 45-27 for the game but came up empty on the power play (0-4) for the second day in a row. Meanwhile, LVC went 1-4 on the power play.
Both Lee and Lowe finished the game with one goal and one assist, and Blomquist and Belak each had one goal as all four players ended the game with a +2 plus/minus. In his first ever collegiate start between the pipes, goaltender Jeffrey Fillion (Chicoutimi, QC) made 26 saves and allowed one goal.
The Colonels return home to the Toyota SportsPlex on Friday, Nov. 21 at 4:50 p.m. for another Middle Atlantic Conference matchup against Misericordia.
