WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes University men's ice hockey team tied the Misericordia University Cougars 4-4 Saturday night at the Toyota SportsPlex, but won the shootout 1-0 in six rounds to earn an extra point.
The Colonels are now 5-1-2 in the regular season and 4-1-1 in the MAC, while the Cougars move to 0-6-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the MAC.
Caiden Mech (San Clemente, CA) got Wilkes on the board first with a goal midway through the first period to put the Colonels on top 1-0, but two minutes later the Cougars evened it up with a power play goal from Charles Obobaifo with 7:08 left in the period.
That score held at the first intermission, and early in the second period Johnathan Lush gave Misericordia a 2-1 lead with his first goal of the season. The Cougars then expanded their lead to 3-1 with a Jaron Ketterman goal at the 9:39 mark, forcing the Colonels to use a timeout. With 4:15 remaining in the period, Patrick Roginski (Shelby Twp., MI/) scored his second goal of the season to make it a one-goal game going into the third.
Early in the third period the Colonels benefited from back-to-back penalties by the Cougars to take the lead back. On a 5-on-3 power play, Miles Harrington (McDonough, GA/) found the back of the net to tie the game, and just 30 seconds later a goal from Carter Jordan (Fort Collins, CO/) gave Wilkes a 4-3 lead with 14:30 left in regulation. The Colonels kept that lead until the 5:12 mark, when a Corbin Scheibel power play goal tied the game again and forced overtime.
After five minutes of overtime neither team scored and a shootout became necessary. Thanks to stellar goaltending from both Misericordia goaltender Ayden Pierce and Wilkes goaltender Jeffrey Fillion (Chicoutimi, QC), it took six rounds for a team to score. Ultimately it was Jack Lee (Naperville, IL) who finally got a shot by Pierce to give the Colonels the shootout win.
Misericordia outshot Wilkes 36-31 for the game, but the Colonels won the faceoff battle 41-34. The Colonels also went 2-2 on the power play while the Cougars went 2-4. Each team had four different goal scorers with Mech, Roginski, Harrington, and Jordan coming through for Wilkes, and Obobaifo, Lush, Ketterman, and Scheibel delivering for Misericordia. Christian Blomquist (Wauwatosa, WI/) led the Colonels in assists with two, and both James Eng and Jack Tos led the Cougars in assists with two each as well.
Between the pipes, Fillion made 32 saves for Wilkes and allowed four goals, and Pierce made 27 saves for Misericordia while also allowing four goals.
The Colonels return to action one more time before Thanksgiving break. They'll be taking on the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons on Tuesday, Nov. 22 on the road with puck drop scheduled for 5 p.m.
