Wilkes Men's Wrestling Claims Four Top-Four Finishers at Cougar Classic
DALLAS, PA -- The Wilkes University men's wrestling team saw four wrestlers finish in the top-four at the Cougar Classic hosted by Misericordia University Saturday afternoon.
At 149-pounds
Braden Sitton (Cross Junction, VA/James Wood) finished in fourth place in the event. He began the day with a fall in :35 before another pin in the quarterfinals in 2:22. Sitton fell in the semifinal to Misericordia's Michael WIlliams 11-6 before dropping the third place bout against York's Jared Schalble by fall in 1:30.
Two Colonels reached the podium at 174-pounds including a fourth place finish from
Joshua Wilkins (Mount Laurel, NJ/Holy Cross) and second place finish for
Omari Watson (Clayton, NJ/Clayton). Watson used back-to-back extra-point wins to earn his spot in the finals. He began with a 17-4 major decision followed by a fall in 5:!6 over York's Aaron Land in the semifinals. Watson then fell by a 6-1 decision to Misericordia's Anthony Matas in the finals. Wilkins lost his quarterfinals bout 3-0 before wrestling back with a 9-0 major decision over Mark Forry of York. After a 7-6 decision in the consolation semifinals, WIlkins fell in the third place bout by fall.
At heavyweight,
Luke Abilio (Montville, NJ/Montville) was the final Wilkes wrestler earning a top-four finish. After falling in his first match, Abilio went 3-0 in consolation bouts to reach the third place bout. He won 13-2, 3-1 and 11-5 in his three consolation matches. Abilio then lost to York's Trey Parker to settle for fourth place.
Wilkes returns home to host Elizabethtown College in a dual match on Tuesday starting at 6:00 p.m.
