Wilkes Men's Wrestling Competes in 92nd Wilkes Open Championship
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University men's wrestling team hosted the 92
nd annual Wilkes Open at the Marts Center Friday, with
Lucas Miller (Kempton, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) and
Elliot Black (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) finishing in the top four in their respective weight classes. The Wilkes Open features wrestlers from Division I, II, and III teams as well as others from club teams and unattached wrestlers.

Miller opened his day at 184 lbs. with a technical fall over unattached Robert Gagliardi at 5:31. He then added a 7-1 decision over Roanoke College's Dantrell Benson to advance to the quarterfinals, where he defeated Elisha Fox of Eastern University by pinfall at 1:46. In the semifinals, Miller matched up against Army Prep's Nash Banko and lost by technical fall at 5:58. In the third place bout against Roanoke's Vincenzo Corvetto, Miller fell by decision and took home fourth place.
Black shined in his first career Wilkes Open, opening the day at 197 lbs. with a win in the round of 16 by major decision 15-1 over Jose Tapia of Eastern University. In the quarterfinals, Black took his second major decision of the day with a 12-1 win over unattached Mustafa Hadi to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, Black fell by pinfall to Roanoke's Lorenzo Pellot-Vazquez and fell again by pinfall in the third-place bout to The Hill School's Gabriel Smith to take home fourth place.
In total, 34 Colonels competed in the Wilkes Open.
Wilkes takes to the mat again in the new year, as they travel to Lycoming College for the Budd Whitehill Duals on January 9 and 10.
