Wilkes Women's Basketball Downed by Susquehanna 72-46
WILKES-BARRE – Visiting Susquehanna University saw four players reach double figures in a balanced attack as the River Hawks bested the Wilkes University women's basketball team in Landmark Conference action 72-46 Wednesday night in the Marts Center.
Wilkes slipped to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in Landmark games. Susquehanna improved to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in league contests following the road victory.
Wilkes kept pace with the River Hawks throughout the first quarter as back-to-back scores from
Maliyah Warren (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) and three-pointer from
Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) put the Colonels ahead 10-9 with 4:38 on the clock. After two consecutive Susquehanna jumpers, Warren dialed one home from long range tying the game at 13 with just over 1:30 left in the first quarter.
Madison Robel (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) finished off the scoring in the opening stanza for Wilkes with a turnaround jumper as the teams remained tied at 15 after one.
Susquehanna began to pull away in the second quarter using an 11-2 run over the first six minutes to take a 26-19 lead. With the lead at ten,
Delaney Bogdan (Long Valley, NJ/Mendham) stopped the scoring run canning a trey in the corner as Susquehanna took a 31-22 advantage to the half.
Wilkes came out of the third quarter pushing the tempo on offense as Matos scored in transition and back-to-back driving layups from Warren forced a Susquehanna timeout with the River Hawks leading by five at 33-28. The visitors stormed back with an 11-2 run to push the lead back to double digits at 44-32 to finish the third.
The River Hawks lead grew to as many as 24 points late in the final frame as the visitors outscored Wilkes 28-14 in the fourth to seal the conference victory.
Warren led the Wilkes attack with 15 points and six rebounds while Matos followed with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Annie Greek topped four players in double figures for the Rover Hawks finishing with 13 points.
Wilkes continues its Landmark road stretch on Saturday when the Colonels face Catholic University at 4:00 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
