STEVENSON, Md. - The Wilkes University men's ice hockey team travelled to Stevenson Friday night and lost to the Mustangs 3-2 in overtime, despite a third period rally.
The Colonels drop to 7-2-2 overall with the loss and 4-2-1 in the MAC, while the Mustangs improve to 6-4 overall and 5-1 in the MAC with the win.
The start of the game was far from ideal for the Colonels as the Mustangs got on the board just over two minutes into the first period. Connor MacDonell scored a goal off assists from Gage Parillo and Keenan Schneider. From there Stevenson controlled the first by outshooting Wilkes 17-9 and held their one-goal lead going into the first intermission.
The second period was more of the save as Wilkes was outshot again 16-7. The Mustangs also were awarded two power play chances in the period, and came through on their second attempt with a power-play goal from John Musella at the 6:32 mark to extend their lead to 2-0.
Wilkes still trailed by two at the start of the third period, but cut the deficit in half with a Matt Carlson (Delmar, NY/) goal just 46 seconds into the period, giving Tyler Boudreau (Edmonton, AB/) and Christian Blomquist (Wauwatosa, WI/) an assist. With 15 minutes remaining in regulation, Colonel goaltender Duncan Rolleman (New Hamburg, ON/) left the game with an injury after making his 35th save of the evening, forcing backup goalie Jeffrey Fillion (Chicoutimi, QC) to enter the game in relief.
With the score still 2-1 with 8:58 to play, Patrick Roginski (Shelby Twp., MI/) tied the game for the Colonels with a goal off an assist from Boudreau and Carter Jordan (Fort Collins, CO/). Neither team scored in for the remainder of regulation and the game went into overtime.
In overtime both teams went back-and-forth to decide a winner, but ultimately the Mustangs escaped with the win when Aiden Lindley maneuvered through the defense and poked the game-winning goal past Fillion.
Stevenson outshot Wilkes 47-27 and went 1-2 on the power play, while the Colonels didn't go on the power play all game. The Mustangs also won the faceoff battle 37-29. Carlson and Roginski each led the Colonels with one goal each, and Boudreau led the team in assists with two. Rolleman started the game between the pipes for Wilkes, making 35 saves and allowed two goals in 46 minutes before leaving early. Fillion made nine saves and allowed the overtime goal in his 19 minutes of action.
Wilkes looks to even up the weekend series with Stevenson at one win a piece tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
