Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey Swept by Stevenson in Road Weekend Series
STEVENSON, Md. - The Wilkes University men's ice hockey team lost their second game in two days to the Stevenson University Mustangs 4-0 Saturday afternoon.
The Colonels fall to 7-3-2 overall with the loss and to 4-3-1 in the MAC, while the Mustangs improve to 7-4 overall and 6-1 in the MAC.
Similarly to their first game against the Mustangs on Friday, the Colonels had to overcome an early deficit. At the 8:42 mark of the first period, Jack Karlsson scored to put Stevenson on top 1-0, giving Matt Yeager and Carson Galin assists on the play.Â
It remained a 1-0 game at the first intermission and for nearly the entire second period. Wilkes controlled the pace by outshooting Stevenson 14-2 in the period, but failed to score due to lights out goaltending from Stevenson's Ford DeLoss. With 0.7 seconds left in the second period, John Musella beat the buzzer with his seventh goal of the season to extend the Mustang lead to 2-0.
Wilkes had chances in the third period to close the gap with three power play opportunities, but DeLoss kept them off the scoreboard and two empty net goals in the last two minutes of the game sealed a Stevenson victory.
The Colonels outshot the Mustangs 34-21 overall but went 0-4 on the power play. Individually, Cam Lowe (Lancaster, MA/) led the team with six shots on goal and goaltender Jeffrey Fillion (Chicoutimi, QC) took the loss with two goals allowed and making 17 saves. Meanwhile, four different players found the back of the net for the Mustangs, and DeLoss earned the win in net with 34 saves.
The Colonels won't return to the ice until 2026. Their next game is on the road against Arcadia on Jan. 9 at 3:30 p.m.
