Strong Second Quarter pushes Drew past Wilkes Women's Basketball

MADISON, N.J. – The Wilkes women's basketball team fell on the road at Drew University Wednesday night, as the Rangers took a 21-point second quarter to a 68-51 final score from Baldwin Gym.

The Colonels fall to 0-22 on the year with an 0-15 record in Landmark play, while the Rangers improve to 13-8 with a 9-6 record against conference opponents.

The Colonels took an early 4-0 lead with buckets from Maliyah Warren (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) and Nadia Evanosky (Dallas, PA/Dallas), but Drew fired back with a 12-0 run to take their first lead of the game. Emma Stout (Bangor, PA/Bangor) and Reagan Holden (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Wilkes-Barre Area) both hit from beyond the arc as a part of a 12-4 Colonel run that tied the game at 16 with 1:14 left in the first. The Rangers landed another three before the quarter ended, but an Evanosky layup just before the horn cut the deficit to one going into the second quarter.

Drew's offense exploded in the second frame, scoring 21 points while holding Wilkes to only four field goals totaling nine points. Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) led the Colonels with five points in the frame as they went into the half down 40-27.

The Colonels outscored the hosts in the third 10-9 and traded baskets in the fourth, but the gap was too great to overcome as Drew went on to victory. Warren led the Colonels in the second half with seven points.

Matos led the Colonels with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, both team-highs. Warren was one point shy of a double-double of her own, grabbing a season-best 10 rebounds with nine points. Stout had eight points off the bench, shooting 3-4 from the field.

The Colonels return home for their next contest, a matchup against Elizabethtown College on Saturday, February 15 for Senior Day. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
