Wilkes Women's Basketball Falls on Senior Day to No. 20 Elizabethtown

WILKES-BARRE – Visiting Elizabethtown College used a big second half on way to an 82-55 Landmark Conference victory over the Wilkes University women's basketball team Saturday afternoon in the Marts Center.

Wilkes slipped to 0-23 overall and 0-16 in conference games. Elizabethtown improved to 20-3 overall and 14-2 in league contests.

Wilkes kept thigs close early as five straight points to start the first quarter gave the Colonels a 5-1 lead one minute into the contest. Emma Stout (Bangor, PA/Bangor) drained a three-pointer followed by a Nadia Evanosky (Dallas, PA/Dallas) layup did the damage. Elizabethtown battled back taking a two point lead before two Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) free throws cut into the deficit for Wilkes trailing 10-8 with 4:19 on the clock. Matos added a three-pointer later in the quarter to keep the Colonels within four, before back-to-back field goals from the Blue Jays put the visitors ahead 22-15 after one.

Elizabethtown outscored the Colonels 22-11 over the second ten minutes of play taking a 43-26 advantage to the break.

The Blue Jays continued their hot shooting using a 15-4 run in the first five minutes of the third quarter to push the lead to 56-28 with just under five minutes on the clock. Matos hit four free throws to count for the remainder of the Colonels points in the frame.

The Elizabethtown lead never fell below 24 points over the final 10 minutes of play as the visitors sealed their 20th victory on the season.

Matos led Wilkes with a game-high 18 points and four rebounds going a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe. Evanosky followed with 13 points and six rebounds.

Lindsay Boyd topped three Blue Jays in double figures finishing with 12 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Wilkes honored its two seniors, Stout and Julia Askins, prior to tipoff in its Senior Day ceremony.
