Wilkes Men's Lacrosse Falls in Landmark Season Opener Against Elizabethtown
EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University men's lacrosse team dropped a 25-3 decision to visiting Elizabethtown College in both teams' season and Landmark Conference openers Friday afternoon at Bruggeworth Field.
Elizabethtown raced out to an 8-0 lead after one quarter thanks to three goals from Jake Woodworth. The Blue Jays continued their offensive attack with eight more tallies in the second frame to take a 16-0 advantage at the half. Woodworth began where he left off in the second scoring three more times. Tristan Coleman assisted on six of the 16 first half goals.
Wilkes got on the board in the third quarter as
Matthew Rotolo (Long Island, NY/St. John the Baptist) scored his first collegiate goal to make it 20-1 with 5:42 left in the frame. Oscar Kline added the first of his career with :14 remaining in the third as Elizabethtown led 23-2 after three.
Elizabethtown added two more scores in the fourth while
Austin Sosnovik (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) found brother
Stone Sosnovik (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) for the Colonels last tally of the contest with 7:43 left in the game.
Elizabethtown held a 51-13 shot advantage throughout the game with 36 coming on goal. The Blue Jays also totaled 46 ground balls and caused 27 Wilkes turnovers. Wilkes finished 11-for-22 on clearing attempts while Elizabethtown went 16-for-20.
Caleb Miller (Mohrsville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) played all 60 minutes in goal for Wilkes finishing with 11 saves. The Blue Jays used three different goalies with starter Brayden Franey going 30 minutes making three stops earning the victory.
Wilkes returns to action next Saturday, February, 22 when the Colonels host Pitt Braford in a non-conference tilt scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Schmidt Stadium.
