Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey Shutout Alvernia 5-0 on Senior Day
WILKES-BARRE - The Wilkes men's ice hockey team defeated Alvernia 5-0 on senior day this afternoon, after previously going to shootouts in their last two meetings against the Golden Wolves.
The Colonels improve to 16-7-2 overall with a 16-3-2 record in MAC play, while the Golden Wolves fall to 10-12-2 overall and 8-10-2 in conference play.
Matt Carlson (Delmar, NY) and Leyton Pettypiece (Rochester, MI) opened the scoring in the first period for the Colonels. Pettypiece's goal came on a power play, scored after a faceoff win by Daniel Nau (Wake Forest, NC) and a first shot attempt by Pettypiece.
Neither team found the back of the net in the second period, but Joe Johnson (Midland, MI), Nau, and Nick Swain (Jackson, NJ) added three more goals for the Colonels in the third period. Johnson's goal was scored following a saved shot by Jack Perna (Sykesville, MD), and Nau's goal was scored right after the faceoff following Johnson's goal. Swain slotted the final goal of the night for the Colonels following a successful penalty kill.
Miles Harrington (McDonough, GA), Cole Jungwirth (Bloomington, MN) and Swain picked up assists in the first period, and Nick Del Gaizo (Basking Ridge, NJ), Max Cocchi (Ludlow, MA), and Swain added the assists for the goals in the third period.
Harrington led the team in shots with six total, followed by Carlson, Swain and Pettypiece with four. Nate Terski (North Grafton, MA) had the team high in blocks with three, and Carlson, Johnson, Nau, Judson McGrath (Dallas, TX) and Tyler Boudreau (Edmonton, AB) each had two. Cocchi went 10-14 in the faceoff circle and in goal Perna recorded 26 saves for a 1.00 save percentage.
Wilkes honored its eight seniors, McGrath, Perna, Swain, Jungwirth, Johnson, Cocchi, Luke Dobles (Spencerport, NY) and Lorenzo Marcolin (Saratoga Springs, NY) prior to today's game.
The Colonels concluded their regular season with today's win over Alvernia, and will begin play in the MAC playoffs starting on March 1.
