Wilkes Baseball Drops Season-Opening Doubleheader at Shenandoah

Wilkes Baseball Drops Season-Opening Doubleheader at Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Wilkes University baseball team opened their 2025 campaign Sunday afternoon, dropping both games of a doubleheader at Shenandoah University at Kevin Anderson Field at Bridgeforth Stadium 6-5 and 10-3.

The Colonels fall to 0-2 to start the season, while the Hornets improve to 4-0 overall early in the season.

Wilkes scored three runs to kick off game one, as Jimmy Brazofsky (Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge) put a ball in play that allowed Matt Show to score and Jack Mathis (Exeter PA/Wyoming Area) to double the lead on an error from the Hornets catcher. Luke Spencer (Lehman, PA/Lake Lehman) added another as he stole home while Brazofsky was picked off at first base.

The Hornets responded with five unanswered runs in the first three innings, taking a 5-3 lead heading into the fourth inning. Wilkes tied the game in the fifth inning as Luke Spencer (Lehman, PA/Lake Lehman) walked with the bases loaded to bring home Trehnon Hugo (Wyalusing, PA/Wyalusing), then Zack Luksic (Shavertown, PA/Dallas) singled through the left side to bring home another and tie the game at five.

Shenandoah scored the winning run in the sixth inning, as first-year pitcher Sal Colello (Highland Mills, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) hit a batter with the bases loaded and drove a run in. After a weather delay, the Hornets shut the Colonels out in the top of the seventh to take the victory.

Colello (0-1) was given the decision and was one of five Colonel pitchers to take the mound in the game. AJ Levandoski (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) started the game and allowed four earned runs with two strikeouts. At the plate, Mathis led the Colonels going 2-for-3 with a double in his first game with the team.

The Colonels opened the scoring in game two as well, as Show scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first. The Hornets quickly took the lead back with two runs in their half of the first inning and scored four more unanswered across the next three innings to take a 6-1 lead.

Wilkes got back on the board in the top of the fifth inning as Jacob Cambria (Elysburg, PA/Southern Columbia) reached on an error by the Shenandoah shortstop that allowed Hugo and Mathis to score and cut the deficit to 6-3. It wouldn't be enough, however, as the hosts added three more runs to take a 10-3 lead.

Zachary Lloyd (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) (0-1) was given the decision after giving up two runs in only 0.2 innings pitched. Caleb Graham (Exeter, PA/Wyoming Area) led all Colonel pitchers with two strikeouts in this game. At the plate, Spencer, Luksic, and Cambria had the only three hits for Wilkes.

The Colonels take the field again on Saturday, February 22 as they face SUNY Cobleskill in their home-opener at Bruggeworth Field. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
