Wilkes Men's Volleyball Defeat Bard and Mount Aloysius in Senior Day Tri-Match
WILKES-BARRE - The Wilkes men's volleyball team swept their senior day tri-match against Bard and Mount Aloysius on Saturday, defeating Bard 3-1 and Mount Aloysius 3-0.
Game 1 | Wilkes 3, Bard 1
The Colonels defeated Bard in their first match of the day by a score of 3-1. The Colonels took sets one, three and four with scores of 27-25, 25-18 and 25-20, while Bard took set two 25-19.
Jackson Shafer (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) and Lucas Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) led the team in kills with 17 for Shafer and 12 for Lucas Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central). Shafer also led in aces with four as well as in digs with 10. Jacob Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) led in blocks with three followed by Shafer and Lucas Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) with two. James Brust (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) had the team high in assists with 28, followed by Josh Conley with 11. Alex Derk (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) recorded 10 digs and Ryan McCorry (Tuckerton, NJ/Pinelands) tallied eight.
Wilkes outperformed Bard in aces and blocks with seven aces over their five and eight blocks over their six. The Colonels recorded 49 kills and 129 total attacks in their first match of the day.
Game 2 | Wilkes 3, Mount Aloysius 0
The Colonels swept the Mounties in their second match of the day, going 25-23 in set one, 25-17 in set two and 25-21 in set three to secure the win.
Shafer and Lucas Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) led the team in kills, with Shafer recording 12 and Lucas Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) recording nine. Lucas Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) also led in blocks along with Aaron Ladd (Souderton, PA/Pennridge) who each recorded three while Shafer tallied two. James Brust (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) tallied a team high 26 assists, with Conley recording five and Derk with three. Shafer led in digs with 10 throughout the match followed by Lucas Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) with six and Derk with five. During this match, Shafer reached 1,000 kills and was recognized for becoming the first men's volleyball player in Wilkes program history to reach 1,000 kills in his career.
The Colonels tallied 36 total kills during this match and 100 total attacks, while also outperforming the Mounties in points, kills, aces, blocks, and assists.
Prior to the start of the second match of the day, both Lucas and Jacob Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) were recognized as part of today's senior day activities.
The Colonels will be on the road for their next match on Tuesday, February 25 as they face Widener in Chester. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
