NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Host Mt. St. Mary raced out to an 8-2 lead at the break then outscored the Wilkes University women's lacrosse team 6-1 over the final two quarters on way to a 14-3 non-conference victory Saturday afternoon .
 
The Colonels fell to 0-2 overall on the year while Mt. St. Mary picked up its first win of 2025 in its season opener.
 
After Mt. St. Mary scored the game's first seven goals, Leah Aponte (Danbury, CT/Danbury) notched her first goal of the year thanks to an assist from Kellie Scott (Northport, ME/Kents Hill) with 5:24 left in the second quarter.
 
Brooklyn Pedana (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) scored the first of her two goals with :07 left in the first half as Mt. St. Mary took a six-goal advantage to the break.
 
Pedana rounded out the Colonels scoring midway through the fourth quarter scoring unassisted at the 8:27 mark.
 
Mt. St. Mary held a 41-8 shot advantage while causing 35 Colonel turnovers in the game. The hosts were also 3-for-7 in free position attempts.
 
Brooklynn Donia (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) finished with 15 saves in a losing effort in net for Wilkes.
 
Wilkes makes its home debut on Wednesday when the Colonels host Gwynedd Mercy University for a non-conference game scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Schmidt Stadium.
