Wilkes Women's Lacrosse Drop Midweek Contest to Gwynedd Mercy
EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. - The Wilkes women's lacrosse team fell in their home opener against Gwynedd Mercy on Wednesday night, with a final score of 17-6.
Gwynedd Mercy opened the scoring early in the first quarter, with Elisia Frank (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) scoring the equalizer just a minute later for the Colonels. The Griffins went on to add five more goals in the first quarter to take an early lead.
Morgan Foytack (Moscow, PA/North Pocono) opened the scoring in the second quarter, netting the Colonel's second goal of the game. The Colonels were able to hold off the Griffins from finding the back of the net until the final two minutes when they added their seventh goal of the game.
The third quarter saw a lot of action as Brooklyn Pedana (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area), Sam Mullen (Dover, PA/York Catholic) and Frank all scored for the Colonels. Gwynedd Mercy found the back of the net six times in the third, resulting in an eight goal advantage for the Griffins going into the fourth quarter.
The Griffins added four more goals in the fourth quarter while Pedana rounded off the scoring for the game, netting the sixth goal for the Colonels in the final 30 seconds of play. Foytack, Taylor Sparks (Monroeville, NJ/Woodstown), Frank, and Mullen all picked up assists on Colonel goals throughout the game.
Frank and Pedana led the team in shots with six apiece, followed by Mullen and Leah Aponte (Danbury, CT/Danbury) who each recorded five. Sparks recorded four ground balls for the team high along with Mara Adams (Mehoopany, PA/Tunkhannock Area) and Pedana who had three apiece. In goal, Brooklyn Donia recorded 10 saves on 27 shots on goal.
The Colonels will be on the road for their next matchup, facing Marywood this Saturday, March 1, in a 12 p.m. game.
