Wilkes Football Announces Coaching Staff Changes; Dickerson Elevated to Offensive Coordinator, Hoovler Promoted to Full Time Assistant Coach

WILKES-BARRE – Wilkes University head football coach David Biever announced several changes to the coaching staff on Tuesday afternoon.

With the departure of offensive coordinator Matt Rogers, who accepted the head coaching position at Hartwick College, Kyle Dickerson has been elevated to replace Rogers as the Colonels Offensive Coordinator. Heath Hoovler '22 will move into a full-time assistant role serving as the Special Teams Coordinator and Offensive Assistant.

"Really excited for Coach Rogers and his new opportunity," said Biever. "He is a great coach and a better person, he will do a great job leading his new team at Hartwick," he added.

Dickerson just finished his fifth season on the sidelines for Wilkes in 2024 where he served as the special teams coordinator and recruiting coordinator as well as working with the Colonels wide receivers. He takes over a Colonel offense that ranked second in scoring in the Landmark Conference at 38 points per-game last season racking up 51 total offensive touchdowns including 30 on the ground and 21 through the air. Over his time working with the Wilkes receivers, Dickerson coached three All-Conference players including Nate Whitaker in 2022 and Devin Higgins (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) twice in 2023 and 2024.

Dickerson also coached the Wilkes special teams kickoff return unit last season which accounted for 610 yards on 36 returns including a 93-yard touchdown from Rahmel Terry (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) in the Colonels 53-28 Landmark Conference win over Lycoming College.

"Coach Dickerson earned his opportunity to lead this offense and put his vision on what we can be offensively," stated Biever. We know coach and what he has done for this program so it was an easy decision to give him the responsibility to lead our offense," added Biever.

Dickerson played four years at Albright College in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) where he earned three All-MAC awards, two All-ECAC selections and two All-East honors from D3football.com before graduating in 2019.  He caught 170 passes for 2,170 yards and 21 touchdowns throughout his career at Albright as the team won the 2015 MAC championship.

Hoovler returned to his alma mater last year in an intern position coaching the Colonels running backs. The former Wilkes quarterback coached two-time All-Region and three-time All-Conference selection Elijah Jules (Red Bank, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) who finished as the Landmark Conference leading rusher in 2024 with 1,289 yards and 20 touchdowns.

"Coach Hoovler is a great young coach and knows Wilkes better than most being an alum," explained Biever. "We are very excited for him to lead our special teams units and assist our offense. He is an energetic guy who is passionate about developing young men both on and off the field," Biever noted.

Hoovler, a four-time MAC Academic Honor role as a student, played in 18 games under center for Wilkes posting 249 yards and four total touchdowns in a reserve role.

Dickerson and Hoovler begin their new roles immediately as Wilkes readies for spring practices.
