Wilkes Men's Lacrosse Drops 11-6 Decision to Marywood
EDWARDSVILLE – Visiting Marywood University used balanced scoring throughout the first three quarters on way to an 11-6 non-conference victory over the Wilkes University men's lacrosse team Wednesday night at Schmidt Stadium.
Wilkes fell to 1-2 overall on the season following the home defeat while Marywood picked up its first victory of the year standing 1-1.
Wilkes raced out to a 3-0 lead with 7:15 left in the first quarter.
Stone Sosnovik (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) started the scoring for the Colonels with a man-up goal off an assist from his brother
Austin Sosnovik (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh). Six minutes later another man-up goal came off the stick of Oscar Kline with a helper from A. Sosnovik. Just :18 later, with the non-releasable penalty about to expire,
Tim Hartka (Phoenix, MD/Calvert Hall) rang the bell scoring a goal off yet another assist from A. Sosnovik.
Marywood responded scoring three unanswered goal over the next six minutes tying the game at 3-3 with 1:43 left in the frame.
Anthony DelDuca (Westchester, NY/Westlake) gave the Colonels a 4-3 lead with one last score with :31 remaining with the fourth assist to A. Sosnovik.
Matthew Rotolo (Long Island, NY/St. John the Baptist) began the second quarter with a goal off a Hartka assist with 9:17 on the clock as Wilkes led 5-3. From there Marywood answered back with four unanswered goals including one on a Wilkes non-releasable penalty to take a 7-5 advantage at the half.
The Pacers continued their offensive attack with three more scores to start the third quarter taking a 10-5 lead with 2:16 left in the period. Hartka added a man-up goal with 1:08 remaining in the frame to cut the deficit to 10-6 after three.
The teams played a scoreless fourth quarter until Lucas Wilson sealed the road victory over Marywood with an unassisted goal at 4:18.
Marywood held a 41-29 shot advantage with 26 coming on goal to the Colonels 19 attempts. The Pacers finished 20-of-22 on clearing attempts while Wilkes was 16-for-22 on clearing opportunities.
Wilkes dominated the faceoff circle taking 17-of-20 draws.
Sosnovik finished with a team-best four points on four assists while Hartka added three points on two goals and one helper.
Caleb Miller (Mohrsville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) posted 15 saves in a losing effort for Wilkes in net.
Wilkes is back in action next Wednesday when the Colonels travel for spring break with a non-conference matchup at Virginia Wesleyan University at 5:00 p.m.
