Wilkes Basketball Welcome Scranton for Wednesday Night Doubleheader

WILKES-BARRE - The Wilkes men's and women's basketball teams will be hosting Scranton this Wednesday, with the women tipping off at 6 p.m., followed by the men at 8 p.m.

Men's Preview

The Colonels picked up a 65-54 win over Juniata this past Saturday, increasing to 14-5 overall and 8-4 in conference play. 

Sitting at second in the conference in scoring is Lucas Lesko (Northampton, PA/Northampton), who is averaging 21.7 points per game. Cayden Merrifield (Scranton, PA/West Scranton), who is 12th in the conference in scoring, follows behind Lesko, and is averaging 13.9 points per game. Lesko is second in the conference in rebounds with an average of 7.3 per game and Jack Argento (Hershey, PA/Hershey) sits in 10th with an average of 5.8 rebounds per game. Merrifield leads the team in assists and is second in the Landmark with an average of 4.4 assists per game. Argento follows, averaging 2.5 assists per game and is ranked 12th in the conference. Lesko is second in the conference in blocked shots with an average of 1.4 per game and Argento leads the team in steals, averaging 1.4 per game.

The team averages 78.1 points per game offensively, leaving them ranked fourth in the conference in scoring. The Colonels are shooting .468 from the field, .323 on three point shot attempts and .677 from the free throw line. They are second in the conference in combined team rebounds, with an average of 38.6 per game. 

The Royals are currently sitting 10-9 overall and are 5-7 in conference play, having most recently defeated Goucher this past weekend by a score of 90-63.

Will McLoughlin leads Scranton in scoring, averaging 15.4 points per game, as well as in rebounds with a 6.9 average per game. Jon Spatola leads in assists, averaging 3.4 assists per game. McLoughlin also leads in blocked shots, averaging 1.2 per game. Spatola is first in the conference in steals, averaging 2.5 per game. 

Offensively, the Royals are averaging 63.3 points per game and are shooting .446 from the field. On three point shot attempts, they are shooting .305 and from the free throw line they are shooting .753. In combined team rebounds, they are averaging 31.7 rebounds per game. 

 

Women's Preview

The Colonels are currently 0-19 overall and 0-12 in conference play, coming off a close game against Juniata where they fell 68-56. Wilkes Athletics will be celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day from February 4-6. As part of the celebrations, all students will be given a free ticket to the women's basketball game as well as have a chance to get free Wilkes gear throughout the night and participate in a group photo following the dance team performance at halftime. 

In scoring, Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) leads the team and is ranked fifth in the conference with an average of 15.1 points per game. Nadia Evanosky (Dallas, PA/Dallas) follows with an average of 7.4 points per game. Evanosky and Matos also lead in rebounds, with Evanosky at a 7.7 rebound average per game and Matos at 7.1, leaving them at fifth and seventh in the conference. Evanosky is 11th in the conference in blocked shots, averaging 0.7 per game, and Maliyah Warren (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) follows, also with an average of 0.7 blocks per game. Evanosky is also second in the conference in steals with an average of 3.4 per game.

The Colonels are currently averaging 47.4 points per game, and are shooting .284 from the field. On three point shot attempts, they are shooting .198 and from the free throw line they are shooting .638. In combined team rebounds, Wilkes is averaging 36.1 rebounds per game.

No. 3 ranked Scranton is currently 19-0 overall and 12-0 in conference play, having most recently defeated Goucher 106-53 this past weekend. 

Kaci Kranson leads the conference in scoring, averaging 18.5 points per game, followed by Elizabeth Bennett who is averaging 11.5 points per game. Kranson also leads in rebounds with an average of 5.6 per game, along with Kyra Quigley who is averaging 5.4 rebounds per game. Kaeli Romanowski leads in assists with an average of 3.5 per game as well as in steals with an average of 3.1 per game, and Quigley leads in blocked shots with an average of 1.7 per game and good for first in the conference. 

The Royals are averaging 81.1 points per game and are shooting .465 from the field. On three point shot attempts, they are shooting .356 and are shooting .752 from the free throw line. In combined team rebounds, Scranton is averaging 44.7 rebounds per game.
