Wilkes Women's Basketball Fall to No. 3 Scranton in National Girls and Women in Sports Day Game

WILKES-BARRE - The Wilkes women's basketball team dropped their matchup against No. 3 ranked Scranton on Wednesday night with a final score of 86-26.

Following the first quarter, the Colonels trailed the Royals 28-9, with Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee), Carolyn Lundy (Fair Haven, NJ/St. John Vianney) and Delaney Bogdan (Long Valley, NJ/Mendham) leading in scoring. Sienna Hallberg led in rebounds with two and Matos recorded three assists. Maliyah Warren (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) and Reagan Holden (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Wilkes-Barre Area) each recorded a steal. 

At the half, the Colonel were behind Scranton 54-11, with Matos and Bogdan leading in scoring, with five and four points apiece. Hallberg led in rebounds at three, followed by Matos with two. Matos held the team high in assists at the half with three, and Bogdan recorded a block. Elizabeth Bennett led the Royals in scoring, recording 20 points in the first half. Marisa Francione led in assists with four, and Bennett, Kaci Kranson and Maddie Hartnet led in rebounds with six apiece. 

After the third quarter, Wilkes trailed 70-17. Matos added three points to total eight, followed by Lundy who had totaled five. Matos also led in rebounds with five followed by Hallberg with four. The game concluded with a final score of 86-26. Matos remained in the lead in scoring with eight total points, with Dana Wartzenluft (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) and Lundy at five points apiece. Nadia Evanosky (Dallas, PA/Dallas) led in rebounds with five throughout the game and Holden added a second assist in the fourth quarter.

Throughout the game, the Colonels shot 20.4% from the field, 15.4% on three point shot attempts, and 33.3% from the free throw line. 

The Colonels will be on the road for their next game on Saturday, February 8, at Susquehanna. Tip off is set for 2 p.m.
